We have an ongoing sharing of organically grown produce. The rationale for this is twofold:
- Chemicals in traditionally grown produce find their way into the soil and water, contaminating both. If those of us who already grow organic produce share our excess with members of the congregation, we decrease that level of pollution.
- The average distance that a food item of any kind is transported to get to its destination is 1500 miles. By sharing our locally grown produce, we have a great impact on the amount of energy used to deliver food from its source to its destination.
