Green Sanctuary Program Food Impact on Our Environment |
||
Our Green Sanctuary efforts are focusing on food because of the many ways it impacts our environment. These include global warming, air, water, and soil pollution, soil erosion, bacterial contamination from livestock, and land and water use. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists' book The Consumer's Guide to Effective Environmental Choices, 40% of US land area is used for grazing livestock for household food consumption. Meat and poultry consumption alone is responsible for a quarter of threats to natural ecosystems and wildlife. To learn more about the environmental impacts of a meat-based diet check these facts gleaned from multiple sources. Peggy Raisglid, owner and chef of Lovin'Spoonfuls, Tucson's premier vegan restaurant, has contributed some recipes and cooking instructions for your use. Vegan cooking uses no animal products. At UUCNWT we've started an organic produce exchange! Grow what you like and exchange with others! |
